The Art of Draping a Kanjeevaram
The Kanjeevaram saree is among the most majestic in India's textile tradition. Its weight, its sheen, and its bold border demand a drape that does justice to every thread. Here is how to wear one with confidence.
Begin by tucking the plain end of the saree into your petticoat at the centre front. Make five to seven pleats of equal width and tuck them neatly at the waist, pointing slightly to the left. The pleats should fall cleanly to the floor without bunching.
Bring the remaining fabric around your back and over your left shoulder. Arrange the pallu so the border faces outward and the embroidered or zari end drapes elegantly over your shoulder. Pin at the shoulder to keep it in place.
A Kanjeevaram pairs beautifully with a silk blouse in a contrasting colour, gold temple jewellery, and jasmine flowers in the hair. The weight of the silk will settle as you wear it — give it a few minutes and it will drape as though it was made for you.
